The 2 ladies fall in love, which could appear severely contrived if it weren't based on a real tale. Production values are surprisingly detailed and lush, and the performing is first-rate. Cast includes Maria Schrader, Juliane Kohler, Johanna Wokalek, Heike Makatsch, Elisabeth Degen, and Detlev Buck. (125 minutes, 1999)
